Why a Toller

A Huski of Mushing-Tours

So a dog - but which one? Although we got all cats from the animal protection, we did not trust ourselves as prospective new dog owners to adequately care for a shelter dog. We preferred to start with a puppy. But that does not make the choice any easier. What kind of dog actually suits us? Our daughter was still in elementary school. So it has to be a "family-friendly" dog. The dog must also not be too big, because our terraced house with limited garden does not seem the optimal home for an Irish Wolfhound. But it should not be too small either - it should be much bigger than our Nokai. We travel a lot in the nature, so the dog has to be weatherproof - from Norway to Croatia from glacier heights to the sea in summer and winter. It didn't take us long to come up with retrievers: "Goldie" or "Labbi". Now as a prospective new dog owner one has little idea and so you "research" on the Internet. Unfortunately we have heard a lot about diseases and bad breeding lines in both breeds and so we were unsure again.

Do we actually fit a dog or a dog to us? Good question, isn't it? But how do you find out? A dog on trial would be great, but you can't expect that from a dog. But the idea is not bad. If a dog can not come to us on trial, then maybe we can go to the dog. But how? Well of the possibilities there are many, due to our inclination for outdoor activities we have decided to go among dogs. We have an outdoor weekend in the Harz with sled dog trappers and their dogs. This was in retrospect the best decision we could have made. We have learned a lot about canines and understood that a dog does not only need to have a walk, but also has the right to be trained and have brain work according to his nature. The weekend has been very good for us despite weather, we enjoyed the weekend very much. As a farewell we got a book tip: "The wolf in the dog's fur" by Günther Bloch. This book explains a lot about the behavior of wolves as urcanids in the wild. Urcanids in the wild and draws comparisons for the human - dog pack. Although we have read other books, this book has become the basis of our dog education.

Back to the Retriever: Again through the Internet we found this in Germany rather unknown, smallest Retriever race the Toller - stubborn, intelligent and sometimes temperamental and equipped with all Retiever characteristics. The family was immediately enthusiastic! - If we had known what that means in everyday life!
